ABSTRACT
This study is a oart of IMSS project in
iated by Chalmer University of Technology in Acai weden and London w Mona usiness School in England. The Korean manufacture
are focussing most on design and quality competitiveness, followed by delivery reliabilit
y. Customer service and product divers
ication are less likely strategic choice for competition in Korea. However, this strategic focus doesn,t seem to be well reflected in adopting appropriate manufacturing practices.
The good performance manufacturers have more diversified product lines, markets and customers. They seem to be more optimistic about the future market environments and more dependent on new product development capability. However, their strategic focus targeting more diversified markets and customers inevitably unstabilizes the production planning and scheduling. They have also shown significantly higher installation level of NC machines and higher portion of external quality costs. There did not exist significant differences in workforce management practices except for the worker suggestion activities for process and product improvements. The poor manufacturing performance group did show higher number of suggestions per year even though their contribution to visible ourcomes seems to be questionable as some empirical studies have pointed out.
